What's New in Version 3.5
-----------------------
QUICKPAD:
The QuickPad component lets you enter new Contact information in an intuitive and free-form way, all without having to open the application. QuickPad takes cues from what you type and creates Contacts accordingly. Its support for multiple open windows lets you enter a lot of information quickly, and return to it at your convenience.
NOTE: If you're running a system earlier than System 7.5, QuickPad requires the Drag and Drop Enabler installed by the Now Installer. Do not disable this extension during installation, or you could experience unpredictable results when using QuickPad.
COMMENTS:
The most significant change to Now Contact 3.5 is the addition of the Comments field in the Detail View. This is a private text field (its contents are not shared over the network) of up to 32K, which appears in the same area as Notes, Events, Documents and Keywords. The Comments field allows you to maintain free-form notes for a Contact without having to break them down into Note objects.
To display the Comments field, drag the four-headed arrow that appears in this area downward. Notice that this tool lets you freely adjust the relative space allotted to each information area.
To add text to the Comments field, simply click in it and type. You can create a Note object from selected Comments text by dragging the selection into the Notes area. Also, if you’ve used the Comments field as a “dumping ground” for a large chunk of Contact data, you can select the address portion separately and drag it to the desired field above, for example, and then drag other text to the correct destination as needed.
Text in the Comments field is also available as a Merge Field, and you can also import text into the field and export out of it.
FIT TO PAGE LIST PRINTING:
Now Contact 3.5 can fit all fields in a Contact List across one printed page, even if the List Layout it’s based on contains more fields than will normally fit on the page. Simply select the “Fit to Page” option in the Printing Options dialog box.
AUTOMATIC TELEPHONE NUMBER ENTRY:
Now Contact’s AutoType™ feature now includes automatic telephone number entry. When you tab into the “Fax:” field after entering a work telephone number in the Detail View, Now Contact automatically inserts the area code and prefix you typed in the “Work:” field. The area code is also automatically entered in the other phone entry fields you’ve defined. You can either accept the entry and add the remainder of the number, or remove the automatic entry and type in the correct area code or prefix. Tabbing out of the field removes the automatic entry.
OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION
=============================
GENERAL:
• You can now register your software directly with Now Software using your modem. After you enter your name and registration number, you're walked through the process of connecting toll-free directly to Now Software, where your registration can be transmitted and processed in about 60 seconds. After this process is complete, you may notice an oddly named file in the same folder as Now Contact. The file will be named something like "~052NLA10 NUD350 Reg Info". Once you've registered your software, feel free to delete this file. It isn't unnecessary once registration is complete.
NOTE: If you're using fax/modem software, such as faxSTF, you may have to turn it off before electronic registration can connect. You can turn the software back on after registering. Consult your fax/modem software documentation for details.
• During installation, you may notice the installer decompressing a file called "Now Contact Power Segment" even if you specified a Macintosh-only installation. The installer decompresses this file regardless of the type of installation that you choose, but discards the file if you have specified a non-Power Macintosh installation.
• If you hold down the Control Key and click on a field in the Detail VIew, a pop-up menu displaying the top 20 entries in that field in the current file appears. Selecting an item from the menu replaces the current text with what you selected from the menu.
TEMPLATE EDITOR:
• If you created custom Templates in version 3.0.0, it's possible that you'll experience problems using these templates with version 3.5. If you experience problems using your custom Templates, you should recreate the problem Template from scratch. In most cases, this will cause the problem to rectify itself. Note that this problem does not affect any of the standard Templates installed by the Now Contact installer, nor does it affect any templates created in Now Contact version 3.0.1
• If you're upgrading from Now Contact version 1.X, be aware that you'll lose some text formatting when your Templates are converted to version 3.5 format. Now Contact 3.5 uses a more powerful word processor that is incompatible with the Templates created by Now Contact 1.X. Now Contact will attempt to convert as much as possible, but you should check your Templates after conversion to ensure that they are formatted correctly.
PRINTING:
• When you printed an address book in version 3.0, the printed contacts were sorted based on your Listing format. Version 3.5 allows you to print an address book based on the current sort order of the list. To access this feature, click "Printing Options" in the Print dialog box. Deselect the "Always Sort by Listing" checkbox, and your cContacts will print in the same order they appear in in the current List View.
• There is a known problem associated with printing EPS graphics in some Template types. We are working to address this problem, but until a fix is available, we hope these workarounds will help you accomplish what you need to do:
Label Templates: In order for a placed EPS graphic to print on a label Template, you must expand the text box on the label so that it encompasses the graphic. To do this, perform the following steps:
1. Open the label Template in which you want to place the graphic in the Template Editor.
2. Place the graphic where you want it on the page.
3. Select the pointer tool (the arrow button in the Toolbar).
4. Click once on the text box containing the text to be printed on the label.
5. Drag the corner of the text box so that it completely surrounds the graphic.
6. If necessary, adjust the margins of the text so that the text starts where you want it to.
When you print, the EPS graphic will print correctly.
Envelope Templates: The steps for envelope Templates are as follows:
1. Open the envelope Template in which you want to place the graphic in the Template Editor.
2. Select the text box containing the return address and choose "Cut" from the Edit menu.
3. Place the graphic where you want it on the page.
4. Select the pointer tool (the arrow button in the Toolbar).
5. Click once on the text box containing the text to be printed on the envelope.
6. Drag the corner of the text box so that it completely surrounds the graphic.
7. If necessary, adjust the margins of the text so that the text starts where you want it to.
8. Paste the return address text box back in the Template.
If you don't cut and paste the return address checkbox as instructed, the EPS graphic will not appear on the printout.
ERRATA:
Page 118 of the Now Contact 3.5 manual states that holding down the Option key while choosing a Contact from the QuickContact menu opens the Detail View for that Contact. This is incorrect. You can set up QuickContact so that it opens the Detail View whenever you choose a Contact from the list by opening the QuickContact control panel and choosing "Opens Contact Record" from the "Selecting Item in menu:" pop-up menu.
